RAY MONDE
The River Between Us
Michael Reid Southern Highlands
The River Between Us explores the winding path of the Shoalhaven River, stretching from Ray Monde’s home near its headwaters to Arthur Boyd’s cherished Bundanon near the river’s mouth. Through this exhibition, Monde reflects on his recent residency at Bundanon, where the river’s contrasts became strikingly clear—its journey from the cold, rugged mountains to the lush, temperate coastal bush.
This exhibition is a conversation of contrasts, traversing time and geography to unite disparate worlds. The river serves as an emotional conduit, inviting viewers to experience the landscape through a
felt sense of place rather than direct representation.
Amidst this landscape, two figures stand, grounding the scene and adding scale. Their silent exchange hints at an unspoken bond—one both rooted in the land and shared between men.
